One of the most important steps in the divorce process is getting a lawyer. This comes either in advance of getting served if you know or it will come after you have been served. In this post we will cover how to get a lawyer and the importance of selecting the right one.
Steps in Getting a Lawyer
There are many steps to do when getting a divorce lawyer. Once you know that you will be getting a divorce you need to do the following:
- Research divorce lawyers in your area
- Analyze the price points to ensure they will be within your budget. Most have a retainer that you pay up front and they will later be paid at an hourly rate.
- Meet with several by having a consultation. A consultation will let you know what they can do for you. Please note that some lawyers may have fees for this consultation session.
- Compare and determine who will be the best fit for you.
- Let the law office know of your decision to go with their services, fill out the paperwork, and pay the retainer.
- From here on, all the legal work will go through your lawyer.
Why You Have to Pick What’s Best for You
I remember when going through the divorce process that I was told it would be the hardest journey. I was told that I needed to find a lawyer who I would like. They will be working with you through your hardest moment. Therefore they need to be someone you feel comfortable with. As someone who did not pick the right lawyer, this is very important. They messed up the process for me significantly (which I will discuss at a later point). I learned how critical the right fit is and I encourage you if you find yourself in this position to really find your best fit.

Amber, I am so glad you are sharing your lawyer experience with others. It was so heartbreaking to watch what your lawyer let happen to you. Never should have been.
